Recognising that open, effective, confidential and sensitive communication with parents and carers as a vital component of the teaching profession, I regularly sort verbal and non-verbal communication opportunities. To create a positive and welcoming environment from day one, I sent home an introductory letter to parents/carers (figure 2). To continue the open communication and allow parents/careers to become involved in their students learning, A letter home to parents and carers regarding the Science and Math unit for the three reception/year one classrooms was created, sparking positive communication with many coming in to ask questions and gaining ideas for the task.

I would regularly inform parents/caregivers in relation to children’s issues or learning, including toilet wetting, forgetting bathers for class swimming lessons, daily routines and seek guidance for student anxiety towards particular subjects. We would discuss both positive and negative class behaviour and I would invite them to work together for resolutions.

The BRiTE online course allowed myself to build awareness and understanding of how to effectively, sensitively and confidentiality communicate with parents and carers. Strategies and ideas to support the involvement of parents and careers in the learning environment were explained through the course module "R", allowing reflection on my own experiences. The online course reiterated the importance of parents and carers playing powerful roles in the classroom and how to create and maintain positive relationships.
