EDUC4845, Creating Calmer Classrooms furthered my understanding in managing challenging behaviour and reiterated that behaviour can be a sign of seeking help. Feeling Real by Leigh Burrows discussed ways of creating calmer classrooms through the use of art, story writing and fitness that can be used within my future classroom and current SSO work.

A favourite behaviour management strategy is the use of Positive Popsicle Sticks as it focuses upon the positive behaviour rather than the negative. Positive hands, positive words and positive play are always repeated throughout the day to remind students of respectful behaviour and the strategy is discussed with parents and carers prior to implementation. This has been a successful behaviour management strategy that I will use within my future classroom.

As positive student behaviour can be effectively developed and supported through clear communicated behavioural expectations, I chose to spend a lesson discussing good choices and poor choices with the class to show my expectations for students to follow. It was found that students formed greater respect for myself as the classroom teacher along with being able to follow instructions more effectively.
